Over the years, I’ve reviewed many home-grown resumes written by c-level executives taking a stab at do-it-yourself career marketing.
Some are pretty good attempts to capture the value they offer to potential employers.
Most don’t hit the mark at all.
Often, the problem these executives face is suddenly being thrust into job search when they never really experienced it before. Like so many senior leaders, they never needed a resume. They easily slid from one job to the next, through referrals and networking, as they progressed in their careers.
They have a vague idea of what should go into a resume, but often don’t understand all that goes into resume strategy. And they often don’t know the impact personal branding and the new job search landscape have had on resume strategy.
Over at Executive Career Brand, I’ve outlined 4 Reasons You Can’t Write Your Own Executive Resume.

Hi Meg – You have nailed a very important point. Many successful executives have never felt the need to keep abreast of current job search and networking strategies. In some cases this is arrogance, in others ignorance.
Unfortunately, many find out after the event exactly what they should have been doing in today’s fast paced job search environment. The lesson is no one can afford not to stay up to date. Even successful executives find they have to look for a job at some point in their careers.
Dorothy, you’re so right. Just about everyone these days could suddenly be out of a job. Many face a rude awakening if they haven’t been paying attention to what’s going on in the new world of search.
I have to say I can understand that they don’t fully grasp what is required to land an executive job today. Things are so much different than even a few years ago.
Thanks for commenting!
Best,
Meg
