You’ve been swept up in the Twitter frenzy. You heard that it can help you in executive job search, so you jumped in and set up an account.

Beyond that, you don’t really know what to do with Twitter.

Oh sure, you didn’t have too much trouble providing the information they required. Selecting your Twitter name was easy. You chose @yourname, or a variation. You used the same photo you put in your LinkedIn profile and used your LinkedIn profile URL for the “Web” prompt. And you inserted your location. All easy, right?

Then you got to the “Bio” and you were stumped, so you skipped over it. You figured that, once you got a feel for Twitter, you’d come back and fill that in.

That’s it. That’s the biggest mistake you can make as a newbie . . . neglecting the bio or having an anemic bio.

Read more about that biggest newbie Twitter mistake at my Executive Career Brand blog.

I’ve been actively on Twitter for a few years now and it’s become an important piece in my personal and business branding efforts.

Although Twitter is wildly popular and much has been written about its value, many of my c-suite executive clients and potential clients are still surprised when I promote Twitter to them as a valuable executive job search tool.

Without taking the time to find out more about it, they still think most people are on Twitter for chit chat, tweeting about what they had for lunch, or other trivial matters.

I explain to them that mounting a job search campaign is very much like running a business. I tell them to think of themselves as a company of one — BRAND YOU — and market themselves in the same way. Twitter and other social media need to be in their brand marketing plan.

For me, as an entrepreneur, Twitter is all about getting my brand and promise of value noticed by potential clients and those who can lead me to more clients, and getting recognized as an industry thought leader and expert.

The idea is to get on their radar and stay top of mind with them so that, when they have a need for my services or know someone who may, they’ll reach out to me.

Sounds just like job search networking, doesn’t it?

Read more about my Twitter strategy, which works for job search too, in my Executive Career Brand post, How Twitter Helped Me Build My Personal Brand.

If you’ve spent some time on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook or other social media channels, you’ve probably wondered if it’s worth the effort – whether you’ll get enough return on your time invested.

As I tell my c-level executive clients, it’s all about determining which platforms you like and are best suited to your needs, narrowing down to just a few, and working them well.

So many of us can easily get consumed and overwhelmed by dabbling in too much social media, and making an impact with none.

Check out my Executive Career Brand post for my social media of choice – the biggest pieces in my online brand communications plan – and a taste of the ROI value of each for me.

You’ve got a good handle on today’s executive job search.

You know what you need to do to land your next job, and you’ve set about doing it.

You’ve already done the following:

Compiled a list of 15-20 target companies that are a mutual good fit.

Researched each company’s current needs and challenges, and how you can help them solve their problems.

Identified a few key decision makers within each company.

Started connecting with these key people through cold contact, introductions, LinkedIn and/or other networking methods.

Take your social networking beyond LinkedIn and at least dabble with Twitter. Here are 2 easy ways to use it to accelerate your job search. Of course, you’ll first have to join Twitter and post a relevant key word-rich bio:

1. Search Twitter for your same target list of companies and key decision makers.

Follow them if they’re there. Listen in on their conversations to get a feel for the corporate culture and for job opportunities, market intelligence and due diligence.

Follow the people they follow.

Retweet (RT) them regularly (to get on their radar and stay top of mind).

Send them an @reply or @mention from time to time, but don’t overwhelm them. Both include that person’s @username, so will show up in the @Mention tab of their home pages. They’ll notice you.

Direct message (DM) them to make contact, if they’ve followed you back and when/if you’re comfortable reaching out to them.

2. Use LinkedIn’s Tweets Application.

You can choose to display your most recent tweets on your LinkedIn profile. I suggest you be careful with this. I find that not all tweets are LinkedIn-worthy.

Another important feature of this app is that it gives you instant access to the updates of people you are following on Twitter and the power to tweet, reply, and re-tweet — all from your LinkedIn home page.

Many top employers are busy on Twitter – posting jobs and real-time news about the company, people, products and services. Your target employers may be there. Want to find out the latest news about them, practically as it happens?

For the past year or so, Susan P. Joyce of Job-Hunt.org, has been continuously updating her list of now 500+ employers recruiting on Twitter.

Among the ranks you’ll find AT&T, EMC, Ernst & Young, IBM, Intel, Kroger, Mattel, Microsoft, Raytheon, Sodexo, UPS and Verizon.

See if her Twitter list, which aggregates the Twitter streams of these 500+ employers, includes any of the employers on your target list.

Following your target employers on Twitter is just one piece to include in your research process – a critical first step in executive job search – for market intelligence, due diligence, and preparation for networking and interviewing.

Much more in my post, Executive Job Search: Research Your Target Employers.

Are you thinking about trying out Twitter, but keep hearing about what a time-suck it is or that it isn’t worth spending any time on? Or maybe you’re not at all media savvy and somewhat afraid of it?

With a little planning, you can gain many benefits from Twitter without spending much time at all and, once you get used to it, it’s pretty easy to use.

Since I started using Twitter about two years ago, I’ve written many posts about how to leverage it for executive job search and brand exposure.

Twitter Turbocharges Executive Job Search and Personal Brand Visibility is a fairly thorough how-to guide, written before the new Twitter came out, but still very useful.

Hop over to my Executive Career Brand post, Twitter Help and Strategies for Executive Job Search and Personal Branding, for more of my best Twitter posts.

You’re a c-level executive in a job search, or you know that in today’s employment landscape, no job is permanent, so job search could be looming in front of you at any time.

Maybe you also know that you should be blogging in some way — whether on your own blog or guest blogging — to get your brand and ROI value message out there and lead hiring decision makers to you.

You get it. You’re blogging or working on it.

Once you’re blogging somewhere, you’d be wise to add Twitter to your brand communications plan and tweet each of your blog posts. You’ll drive more traffic to your blog and extend your brand to a broader social media audience.

I love Twitter. It’s one of my favorite brand communications tool – the perfect complement to my blogging routine.

I advise my c-suite clients that the Twitter strategies I leverage are basically the same ones that will work for them in executive job search.

Here are 3 ways I use Twitter to communicate and build my brand online:

1. My Twitter bio contains my relevant keywords and an abbreviated version of my brand statement. See my post, Does Your Twitter Bio Pack an Executive Brand Punch?

2. My tweets and retweets are consistent with my brand, and reinforce my subject matter expertise and promise of value to potential clients.

3. I tweet things that will be relevant to my target audience, and include my relevant keywords in tweets when applicable, mixing it up by sometimes using hashtags with the keywords.

See my post at Executive Career Brand, to round out my list of 10 Ways I Use Twitter to Build My Personal Brand.
